Born in Omaha, Nebraska. Childhood in Bronx, New York. Teen years: Omaha. Education: MS in zoology, MA in journalism, completed a major in anthropology. Highlights of my life: working on a ranch in the Nebraska Sandhills; working most of my adult life in the wildlife conservation community in the New York City and Washington, D.C., arenas. Literary idols: Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Ten favorite novels: The Sun Also Rises, The Great Gatsby, Lonesome Dove, Cold Mountain, A Suitable Boy; still looking for the other five. What I'd like to live long enough to see: a cloned woolly mammoth. My idea of heaven: a place where vast numbers of large animals are restored to endless wilderness.
